Thane Maynard is the 10th director in Cincinnati Zoo history. During his tenure, the Zoo expanded global and local conservation efforts and opened two of the biggest habitats, Africa and Elephant Trek, in its history. Thane is often seen with his favorite animal, Cruncher the American Alligator.
On Cincinnati Zoo's opening day in 1875, the ducks, geese, and swans could not be released to the Zoo's lake because it was occupied by a six-foot alligator had escaped from its habitat!
On January 24th, 2017, the Cincinnati Zoo's baby hippo, Fiona, was born six weeks before her due date. She only weighed 29 pounds. Fiona is the smallest hippo to ever survive. Her story of perseverance has served as an inspiration for many, and her signature ear wiggle delights all who see it!
Cincinnati Zoo has a long history of pairing single cheetah cubs with a dog companion. The Zoo's first cheetah ambassador, Angel, became best friends with a Great Dane in 1981! Dogs are selected for this important "BFF" role based on temperament, not breed. Canine friends in the Cat Ambassador Program have included Anatolian shepherds, labs, and mutts!
